What is an Islamic burial declaration?

It is a letter of wishes that records, in your own words, that you are to be washed, shrouded, prayed over and buried according to Islam. It sits alongside your will and makes your funeral wishes clear to your family.

Does it replace my will?

No. The declaration does not replace your will and is not a legal substitute for one. It complements your will by setting out your funeral wishes in plain words. Everyone should also have a valid will in place.

Is it free?

Yes. The form is free to receive, complete and sign, and you do not need an account.

What does the declaration cover?

How you are washed and shrouded, the funeral prayer and its timing, where you are buried, prompt release and burial without delay, that your body is not cremated, and who is to carry out your wishes.

Who are the National Burial Council and MBCOL?

The National Burial Council is an umbrella body for Muslim funeral services in the United Kingdom, and it prepared the declaration form. The Muslim Burial Council of Leicestershire arranges Shariah-compliant funerals and holds a copy of your signed declaration.

How do I complete it?

Enter your email address on the home page and we send the form to your inbox. You fill it in online in your own time, then sign it. A copy is sent to you and to the Muslim Burial Council.

What happens to my data?

We only share your data with the National Burial Council and the Muslim Burial Council of Leicestershire, and only to record that you want an Islamic funeral. All data is stored in the European Union, and you can ask us to access or erase it at any time.

Can I change my wishes later?

Yes. Review your declaration regularly and update it if your circumstances change. Keep it stored safely alongside your will.
